Back on Track - Week 11 Thurnscoe (a)

Thurnscoe Institute vs Nostell St Oswalds 27th June 2009 Match Gallery

thurnscoe1.JPGNostell got back to winning ways after a double loss the previous weekend on our first ever visit to Thurnscoe Institute (god bless Sat Nav). After a relaxed warmup, Wanna’s new bat was officially declared knocked in and ready for use and we were to field on another hot afternoon - should someone else take the toss next weekend skip?

While Uncle Ken settled into some good areas first up, Lee became bitten by the Nostell wide bug and was replaced after 6 overs by the Young Captain with both Thurnscoe openers back in the pavilion. Simmons and Liam Harper steadied the ship and put on a hundred partnership with a competitive score back on offer as we went quiet on each other in the middle overs. Credit to the bowlers who stuck at the task, once the partnership was broken wickets fell regularly with Lee coming back well to finish with 6 (not good enough to get a mention on the league site) and Our Dale with a couple before falling to the Nostell injury curse. Thurnscoe were restricted to 170 all out and we tucked in to a nice tea in the shade. [..more..]

“I am turning” - Farmery Florist Cup, Whitley Bridge (h)

After the first league defeat the previous day Nostell had the chance to redeem themselves and push on to the semi finals of the cup when they hosted Whitley Bridge on Sunday.

The Young Captain won the toss and choose to bat first on a wicket that we hoped would play better than the previous day. We lost Rich early on when he was dismissed in similar circumstances to the previous day, the Ginger joined the king in the middle and the pair began to dominate before the ginger threw it away with one to many big shots when a big score was on offer. Slick joined the king and stroked an early boundary to show he still had the form of the day before. [..more..]

My thumb hurts - Week 10 Brodsworth Main (h)

Nostell St Oswalds vs Brodsworth Main 20th June 2009 Match Gallery

The day before the game

brodsworth.JPGDeep in ‘thought’ at work, the young captain decided a quick call to the captain was in order. ‘What’s the weather forecast overnight?, I might put the cover on, should only take 10 minutes!’ declared the captain.

Several hours later after a glance at the ever ‘reliable’ bbc forecast still unsure of the captains intentions the young captain suggested the cover be left off, if only to save the captains energy.

‘Too late, it only took an hour & half. I’ve left Kath, Martha, Alice and the large patio table on a corner each, they should be ok overnight’ came back the text.

To the game [..more..]

“Did he play?” - Week 9 West Bretton (a)

West Bretton vs Nostell St Oswalds 13th June 2009 Match Gallery

ourdale.jpgThis week saw an unbeaten Nostell side make their first trip to picture-postcard West Bretton. Club captain Jimbob, tired after a 3 minute walk from his house strode out for an early toss with the oppo skipper and promptly returned delivering the bad news - bowling in 30 degrees. Why do we always lose the toss on the warmest days?

Saviour Hurst and Uncle Ken shared the new ball, Lee showing decent carry on a used pitch and Kenneth keeping it pitched up to give it a chance to swing. 3 or 4 tight overs passed without incident apart from the electronic scoreboard being a bit optimistic, 587 for 7 after 2 overs would be an interesting game! A grand day out - Farmery Florist Cup Pledwick (a)

Pledwick vs Nostell St Oswalds 31st May 2009 Match Gallery

pledwichrichie1.JPGAnother warm day and another win in the cup. Nostell lost the toss and were unsurprisingly ask to field on the warmest cricket day of the year. The usual it’s sunday and i’m struggling to play issues later the Nostell ’social’ Sunday squad took the field. With one of the clubs all time wicket taker John Cooling making a very welcome return the chaps were ready for the match. [..more..]

If its long, its on - Week 7 Ackworth 2 (h)

Nostell St Oswalds vs Ackworth 2 30th May 2009 Match Gallery

ackworthdale1.JPGWeek saw the the visit of near neighbours Ackworth for the first time in many a year with both teams missing key players, with the sun out and the ground and pitch in good shape Ackworth surprisingly asked Nostell to bat first..

For the first hour it looked as though Ackworths gamble had paid off, Rich went for a duck, cleaned up by an inswinger from left armer Malyon, Mally’s bad run continued getting out to the enthusiastic young opening bowler Longfield bringing myself and the Kiwi to the crease. [..more..]

The Saints Go Marching On- Week 6 Hatfield Town (h)

Nostell St Oswalds vs Hatfield Town 23rd May 2009 Match Gallery

hatfieldlee.JPGIt was the turn of the leagues third placed Hatfield to visit the league leaders last Saturday, the wicket was slightly damp after several heavy down pours the week prior. The young captain stomped (doesn’t he always stomp???) into the changing rooms and let us know we were fielding…So you lost the toss then asked Big Rich?, Nope said the young captain, Tosser said Jason and Heff.

Slick took the new pill and struggled to control the swing, Ken at the other end was having no such problems and he was on target from the first ball. [..more..]

“Who Mentioned Bobby Brown”- The “Captain’s” Thought For The Week.

With the mid week season nearly upon us remember the words of the “Captain”,

“Taking the risk is not the risk”, …..”it’s “not” taking the risk that’s “the” true risk”.

Gardeners world - Week 5 Normanton St Johns (a)

Normanton St Johns vs Nostell St Oswalds 16th May 2009 Match Gallery

normantonken.JPGCut to mid way through the 1st innings (imitation is art) The locals fancy relieving the boredom of a mid ’summers’ day with hand brake turns in the Normanton car park. Nostell’s finest look on from the field, with 2 minute Matt’s lupo love machine closest to the danger. With his car close by slick was turning a shade of red usually seen from a 14 over spell on a hot day.

‘Grunt’ goes slick marching fuming to the car park

’stay cool’ shouts the sensitive young captain

‘My car is hidden behind a lupo, i’m stopping this now with the aid of a brick’ proclaims the now manic slick

‘Don’t do it mate, they’ll just run you over’ replied the young captain

‘too late i’m over the edge’ went lee

‘But who will open the bowling if your gone?’ went the young captain [..more..]

“Think Pink”-Week 4 Conisbrough (h)

Nostell St Oswalds vs Conisbrough 9th May 2009 Match Gallery

week4king.JPGPreamble;

Pre-Match Preparation;

“I’m getting quite upset” said the Young Captain,

“Is it because your bald” asked the inquisitive Martha (the only person in attendance)

“No,No not because of that, but I’m the only one here and there’s the mound to cut, the square and strip to prepare and I know “Slick” will bring tea’s based on a selection of cheap ham and cheese and Conisbrough will complain about the quality and the fact there’s too many bread cakes and nothing to go in them”, bemoaned the Young Captain.

“Is it hard being the Young Captain”, said the sympathetic Martha (wishing the “Captain” had n’t left her in the care of such a sensitive person).

Yes it is, Martha but your only 7 years old so can’t possibly understand, so just hold this dressing room door while I try to re-hang it!! [..more..]

There is only one Saviour- Week 3 Frickley (a)

Frickley 2 vs Nostell St Oswalds 13th June 2009 Match Gallery

frickleylee.JPGNostell CC traveled the short distance to the picturesque ground of Frickley in the round 3 clash last Saturday. With the kiwi back in the side the sound levels in the field, and on the ground, were sure to be raised.

The young captain won his third toss in a row (insert your own jokes here) and elected to bat [..more..]

PDCL comes to Nostell - Week 2 Glasshoughton (h)

Glasshoughton were our first visitors in our first season in the PDCL,  and unusually for us this season we knew a little bit about them with ex-Glasshoughton player and now Nostell Legend Steve Reynolds in our ranks.

With a couple of key players missing we saw the return of ex 2nd X1 captain Matt Crawford to the ranks along with supersub Dan Bishop again taking a break from scoring duties to help the boys out.

With the ground looking fantastic I believe the Young Captain won the toss and batted, the less than hirsute combination of the Young Captain and Lionel opened up, the run rate was good but wickets were falling, Rich was cleaned up by a good nip backer from Williams, the same bowler also got the Young Captain LBW to a lazy shot and soon after Mal was cleaned up by left armer Sharp so at 38-3 a rebuild was needed.
